George Cleveland was educated in the schools of New York city, Schenectady, Albany, Milwaukee, Wis., and New England. In 1853 he removed with his father’s family to Milwaukee, Wis., where he began business life as a clerk in the Farmers’ and Millers’ Bank, of which his father (Newcomb Cleveland) was president. Later in life he was associated with his brother Frederick in the drug business. In February, 1874, he joined his brother Frederick, under the firm name of Cleveland Brothers, in the manufacture of the celebrated Cleveland’s superior baking powder and flavoring extracts. Their goods, now to be found so generally in this country and a part. of Europe, have made the firm one of the leading ones in its business in the’ world.

He is a prominent citizen, a useful member of the church, and a gentleman of ample means. In 1878-9 he held the office of deacon in the First Dutch Reformed church, Albany, N. Y. He is a trustee of the Albany City Homeopathic Hospital, and a member of the advisory board of the Young Men’s Christian Association.

            Of most generous impulses, honorable and high-minded in every relation of life, he is characterized by untiring energy and fidelity in the discharge of every business and public duty. In physique he is of more than medium height and fine personal appearance, and has the prototype broad and high Cleveland forehead.

            Mr. George Cleveland has always manifested the greatest interest in, and is a subscriber for this Genealogy. The compilers desire to express obligations for the many kindnesses rendered. Residence, Albany to 1894, Orange 1894-6.
